I can truly say I am one of the lucky ones. I got to record Scott Hoying when he was just Scott Hoying the young singer – not Scott Hoying lead singer of the global phenomenon, Pentatonix. In case you’ve been living under a rock and have no idea who Pentatonix is: they won Season 2 of the Sing-Off (an acapella singing competition on NBC). Since having won that competition they signed a major label deal with Sony Records and have amassed over a BILLION hits on YouTube due to their insane arrangements of songs, and incredible talent. That’s right, I said a BILLION.
I was introduced to Scott Hoying by Marty Redelman, LeAnn Rhimes‘ old manager. We hit it off instantly, and began to write songs together with Bradley Prakope co-producing and engineering. We did a number of songs together, and I can’t say I’ve had a better vocalist in the studio. He was almost bored, he was so good…lol. Scott is a “one-take” vocalist, without a doubt. You just need to have all your levels set, and mic ready. When he sings – it’ll be magic, you don’t have to worry. 🙂
I’m so honored to know him now, to call him a friend, and I couldn’t be more proud to watch him grow and succeed with Pentatonix. Last time they played in town, they drew almost 90,000 people to their show!! Pretty incredible. They’re all amazing people in the band, and these songs are just a part of his journey, that by now everyone’s getting to know well. I co-wrote these songs with him, and have written a few with him more since then – but you’ll have to wait and see what they sound like!
